Poem Reflection

“My Cherry” was written with a very close friend in mind. I initially thought that it would be easy to write a poem about someone I know so well, however, after several attempts to even start the poem, I began to think otherwise. In addition to highlighting her great features, my point in writing this poem was to expose some of the attributes that I don’t seem to know very well, such as the sense of depression that lingers with all of those who may face internal battles on the daily. Though she comes off as an indefinitely strong individual, she still remains a quiet and delicate creature that bruises easily.

I usually do not write very personally, but I enjoyed inserting myself into this poem. I think that I portrayed a lot of emotion with my word house and the general use of "my," which successfully contributed to the overall sense of that lingering sadness As I read over the poem, I see some inspiration from Charles Bukowski, one of my favorite poets, in my writing, who tends to speak romantically about more serious, depressive topics. However, if I had more time, I would continue to edit this poem, because it still does not feel completely finished to me. After sitting on it for a few days, or even weeks, I can see myself coming back to it to further perfect it.

I hope that from this poem people can realize that even the most beautiful of things have weaknesses, whether those weaknesses be darkness, solitude, or even themselves.
